Time flies, and things get busy. So getting a new mattress is not often top of mind — nor on the top of your to-do list. That’s why we’ve compiled a few questions that’ll help you gauge whether it’s time to make the switch.
How to tell if you need a new mattress:
Has your sleeping space changed?
Is your first mattress from your college days? Do you still live in a dorm? If the respective answers are “yes” and “no,” you probably have the space — and it’s probably the time — to upgrade to a bigger size. Same situation applies if you have significantly upgraded your apartment (or home’s master bedroom) size and just brought your old mattress along because you didn’t want to deal with any extra moving stress.
Do you have different bed partners these days?
No, we don’t mean that. We mean, different than when you first got your mattress. If you have a partner, kid(s), pet(s), or any combo of the above, a queen is generally the smallest you should get to ensure you all have your literal and figurative space.
Are you experiencing aches and pains?
Aches and pains often result in a lack of quality sleep (or a lack of sleep altogether), so changing your mattress to one that helps you fall asleep faster — and sleep better — isn’t a bad idea.
Has it been a decade or more since you bought your mattress?
A mattress’ useful life is around 8 years. Of course, a mattress has its own life based on its construction and quality as well as how frequently it’s used (and by how many people) .. but in general, if it’s been a decade or more since you bought your mattress, you’re overdue for a new.
Do you look forward to jumping into bed every night?
If the answer is no — and if that’s because you don’t love your mattress — dispense with the rule just above, even if your less-than-fabulous mattress is less than 8 years old. Life’s too short -- and sleep is too important — to live with a mattress you hate. Do some good by donating your old one to a charity, and find a new mattress that’s your perfect fit. You deserve it.
